Cardinal Point Marine Ltd is a shipping consultancy providing services to the global shipping industry. It was established by Mike Powell in 2011.

With more than 40 years in shipping, Mike has served as a Master, qualified as a solicitor, and held a variety of senior roles in technical, legal, assurance, and commercial disciplines.

Mike has a track record of delivering improvements within diverse multiple stakeholder environments and executes projects based upon a thorough grasp of the organisation, process, and systems involved and applying formal management of change techniques. Whilst recognising the value of tradition and convention, Mike often challenges their application and proposes alternative and innovative approaches.

About the founder

Mike is a Liveryman and past Warden of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners a Fellow of the Nautical Institute and a Supporting Member of the London Maritime Arbitrators Association.

In addition to sailing in command and qualifying as a Solicitor, Mike’s previous roles have included Chief Business Officer for StratumFive Ltd, Head of Operations for Union Maritime Ltd, Global Head of Operations for Maersk Tankers, Global Head of Tanker Operations for Glencore’s ST Shipping & Transport, Global Head of Voyage Operations, and Manager of Audit & Inspection for BP Shipping, Director (Maritime) of the Confidential Hazardous Incident Reporting Programme (CHIRP) and Marine Operations Advisor for Enterprise Oil plc.

Mike is an advocate of operational excellence and the application of technology to shipping and frequently speaks and advises on these topics and their consequences for the maritime industry and its workforce.
